Tribute to Professor Benedict Oramah, A Pan-African Patriot

In my many encounters with some of the greatest figures of our time—civil rights icons, independence leaders, literary giants, and business pioneers—one truth stands out: they each met pivotal historical moments with courage and decisive action. They were not driven by the desire for legacy but by the urgency of the moment and the weight of responsibility to act.

It is in this spirit that I pay tribute to Professor Benedict Oramah as he concludes a remarkable decade as President and Chairman, and over 30 years of dedicated service to the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). Under his visionary leadership, Afreximbank has become a powerhouse and pillar of African economic independence. He is, without question, the Architect of Modern Economic Pan-Africanism.

Through his bold Blueprint for Economic Transformation, Afreximbank has invested more than $150 billion across Africa, growing its assets from under $1 billion to nearly $50 billion. This has delivered not only life-changing impact for Africa’s most vulnerable but also shareholder returns exceeding 35%.

But beyond the numbers, Prof. Oramah has reshaped Africa’s future by:

  • Championing AfCFTA implementation and facilitating regional trade platforms with an injection of the Bank’s capital exceeding $140 billion;
  • Launching PAPSS, Africa’s fintech backbone, reducing dependency on external currencies and accelerating intra-African commerce;
  • Investing in Special Economic Zones to shift Africa from exporters of raw materials to global manufacturing hubs;
  • Mobilizing African capital for African priorities—laying the foundation for regional resilience through what I call the AfriCatalyst model;
  • And forging enduring bridges with the African diaspora—transforming shared heritage into shared capital, commerce, and commitment.

When the world turned away from Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, and global supply disruptions, Oramah stood firm. Through his Crisis Adjustment Programme, Afreximbank ensured that African nations had access to food, fuel, and medicine—and later extended this solidarity to the Caribbean.

Professor Oramah has done far more than lead a bank. He has ignited a movement. He has advanced the unfinished business of the early pioneers of Pan-Africanism.

Under his leadership, Afreximbank has become a beacon of African self-reliance and dignity. His unwavering belief in solutions designed by us, for us, has inspired and empowered a new generation of African thinkers and doers.

Professor Oramah, we have found in you not just a President, but a Pan-African patriot who transformed Africa’s aspirations into institutions and actionable solutions. Working with you has been a hallmark of my Africa journey—and among its most inspiring moments.

With deepest gratitude and respect—thank you.
