ESSENCE Features Rosa Whitaker: Why Purpose—Not Pay—Drives Power

In a December 2025 ESSENCE feature by Eden Harris, Rosa Whitaker, President and CEO of The Whitaker Group, makes a simple but often overlooked point: real influence is built long before recognition—and it’s sustained by choices made when no one is paying attention (or paying at all).

Rosa’s story is not framed around possessions, but around discipline, persistence, and a clear sense of mission shaped early in life. “My father was a mail carrier. My mother was a mail sorter… But we struggled,” she told ESSENCE, reflecting on the formative years that strengthened her resolve.

AGOA: advocating without a paycheck—because the stakes are real

A central theme of the feature is Whitaker’s continued advocacy for renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA)—a U.S. trade law enacted in 2000 that expired in September 2025 and has enabled tariff-free access for many African exports. Whitaker, now retired from lobbying, underscores what it means to fight for policy that matters even when it’s not commercially convenient: “…it cost me well over a million dollars,” she said, describing the financial tradeoff of staying in the fight without a lobbying contract.

Her message is direct: doing the work for free doesn’t diminish the work—it clarifies the purpose behind it.

Power is not proximity—it’s purpose and strategy

Whitaker challenges the common misunderstanding that power is about access for its own sake. In her words, “Power has to be purpose-driven, and a lot of power is strategy-driven.” That framing rejects performative influence—and instead centers preparation, clarity, and alignment with the right partners and outcomes.

Building what matters—in Ghana and beyond

The ESSENCE feature also highlights Whitaker’s continued work building businesses aligned with her priorities, including a forthcoming Ghana-based fintech venture aimed at supporting underbanked communities.

A leadership model others recognize

Whitaker’s impact resonates across the U.S.–Africa commercial ecosystem. Kendra Gaither, President of the U.S.-Africa Business Center at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, notes Whitaker offers “invaluable lessons” for young women navigating high-stakes professional spaces and praised her AGOA push as a way to deepen U.S.–Africa commercial partnership.
