The Whitaker Group (TWG) would like to congratulate the U.S. House of Representatives which on Thursday (June 11) voted overwhelmingly to extend the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) fora further 10 years. The vote of 397-32 reflects the bipartisan support for AGOA that has characterized the legislation since its passage in 2000.
“AGOA has been a critical tool in strengthening African development as nations strive to diversify their economies, grow their manufacturing sectors, and add value to their commodities,” said Rosa Whitaker,TWG’s President and CEO.
“With this extension, US importers can continue to take advantage of the duty-free status afforded African goods entering the American market under AGOA, and investors can plan for the future, confident that AGOA will be in place until at least September 2025.”
“I would also like to offer my grateful thanks to all those who have stewarded AGOA since the very beginning and who have advocated so hard for this extension – African governments, the Obama Administration, the African Union, the African diplomatic corps, members of the African and US private sectors and civil society, and members of the African Diaspora. We spoke with one voice, and Congress heard us,” Ms. Whitaker said.
Since its passage in 2000, AGOA has generated about 350,000 direct jobs and 1,000,000 indirect jobs in Sub-Saharan Africa, and about 100,000 jobs in the United States. Annual U.S. imports under AGOA have more than tripled from $7.6 billion in 2001 to $24.8 billion in 2013.
