Dear Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus,
Please accept my warmest and most heartfelt congratulations on your thoroughly decisive election as director general of the World Health Organisation. Not only does Africa at long last have one of its own in this critically important position, it has one of its very best!
I wholly concur with the Rwandan delegate, Janine Barde, who told the New York Times that your election was a joy and meant that stakeholders were now in charge rather than bureaucrats.
The WHO is in dire need of the extraordinary leadership you demonstrated as Ethiopia’s minister of health. I am confident that with you at the helm, the organisation will play a pivotal role in ensuring that Africa overcomes the daunting array of health challenges — including barriers to effective care — that have held the continent and its people back.
I have been so enriched by our work together and be assured that I will do everything I can to see that you receive the support you need.
With every good wish,
President and CEO
